Renaldo’s “Severely Sweatin’ Salsa”

Ever eat something that brings back some sort of memory?
I have a memory of a nice little Mexican restaurant in Rice Lake, WI called La Mexicana, that memory is after ordering they would serve warm tortilla chips & a bowl of mild or hotter if you ask fresh made salsa. Nothing fancy, usually watery, but oh so good.
Which brings me to Renaldo’s Gourmet salsa, this particular one is the “Severely Sweatin’ Salsa” made by Renaldo’s LLC out of Seminary, MS.

Ingredients:
Whole peeled tomatoes (tomatoes, tomato juice, salt, calcium chloride, citric acid), onions, bell peppers, vinegar, minced garlic (garlic, water, phosphoric acid), jalapeno and habanero peppers.

Label:
Really a no frills plain label, but with their name lettering might tend to remember the name & the way they printed severely sweatin’ might lead you to think it’s on the hotter side.

Texture & Appearance:
Texture is pretty much very finely chopped with the noticable tiny peices of the garlic, onion red pepper bits.
Appearance, well you can see kind of watery, but works if you serve it in a bowl.

Heat:
Well if this is a severely sweatin’, I’d be severvely jones’in for some sweat. At first I would give a 3, but the heat from the habs does escalate to a 4/maybe 5 with the nice after glow of a top of tongue after burn that reminds you of why you like the whole capsacin& endorphin thing.

Aroma:
The predominant smell I can embrace is the vinegar, followed by tomatoe & onion.

Taste:
It does have the basics of most salsas, & the blend is pretty much there, all ingredients accent each other with nothing dominating or overpowering. does have the heat but IMO lacks the flavors of the chiles used.

Trials with food:
The first thing I thought of was a finger food/ dipping treat, that’s why I baked up some inexpensive love to eat mini tacos. It worked for me, load as much as you can and give it the ol’ one bite.Tried it on my hashbrowns for breakfast & agian tasted good.
there is also like right now (pause) that tortilla chips is a good one also.

Over all view:
It is what it is.
Has a decent flavor blend.
I like it chunky, but hey it is what it is & still like it & will eat it.
If you have recipe’s that use salsa, I think this could be used to infuse the flavors without chunks of after products.

There is a bonus if you have different heat levels in the house, they offer a three pack that consists of a wimpy, mildly perspirin’ & the severely sweatin’.

  2. Hi Mary again. I did not want to put my big old mug at the end of the comment. I still have not figured it out how to put this in my picture. Sorry!

    Great Review!

  3. CB,

I do believe that you are talking with Marv, not Mary. Yes, they do wear cheeseheads, and they seem to be quite proud of it. Go Vikings! :D

I have this memory of eating chicken wings on a hot summer day out of a large Styrofoam cup from a local deli. I remember sweating from the heat of the wings and the temperature outside. It is probably why I am a chilehead today. I miss that deli. Too bad they went out of business over 20 years ago.

  4. I am sorry Marv. I do need some reading glasses and I am in denial. My apologies.

  5. Hey CB,
no prob on the name, I’ve been called worse.
& yes they do wear a cheese wedge, fortunately I am a Minnesota transplant and am with Buddah on the purple pride.
Wisc. = good cheese, buy liquor on sunday & in grocery stores & did say good cheese shops?

  6. Sounds like a good basic salsa to have on hand.

And as long as the folks up there keep making wonderful cheeses, I do not care if they do wear cheese wedge hats, LOL. The cheeses are something to be proud of.
