This BBQ sauce came to me as a bit of a mystery.
It has a attractive looking label, and the sauce looks good in the bottle.
There are no other markings on the bottle.
No ingredients label.
No list of a website.
The name Cinn & Spice gives us a hint of what might be in the sauce though.
OK, so they have gotten my interest.
I shake the bottle, and can see that there is a bit of a red colored oil on top.
Looking through the bottle, I see flecks that are probably finely chopped onions, garlic, and red peppers.
I open the bottle.
What’s this ? Hum, the aroma of cinnamon, possibly allspice, pumpkin, then a bit of cayenne and onion.
This BBQ sauce smells a lot like a pumpkin pie.
I pour some of the sauce on a tortilla chip. It is fairly thin bodies, and pours freely from the bottle.
Interesting. So, I taste the sauce. Wow, it tastes like a pumpkin pie. It is sweet, and most likely has pumpkin in the mix, along with cinnamon and allspice, and perhaps a bit of vanilla and molassis. There is the slightest amount of heat from the hot peppers. The extreme sweetness blocks the sensation of the sauce being hot, however, there is a lingering bit of black pepper like heat.

So, what does one do with a mystery BBQ sauce that tastes like liquid pumpkin pie, with a hint of pepper ?
It is a bit tropical, so, this makes me thing it might work with chicken or shrimp. I choose shrimp, and shell and butterfly about 10 shrimp, sprinkle them lightly with salt, and then brush on the 5 G’s BBQ Sauce, and put them under the broiler until the shrimp have cooked through, and the BBQ sauce has thickened.

You must be wondering by now, just how they tasted. Well, they tasted like shrimp that had pumpkin pie on top. Edible, no doubt, but still, just not quite right. Perhaps this sauce would have worked better with chicken ? What I am thinking most though, is it would work on something like grilled ripe plantains, or, grilled banana.

I attempted to find out a bit more about this mystery sauce. Scott Roberts told me it came from the Weekend of Fire, and was brought there by someone named Liz Brown, who is associated with a 5 G’s BBQ in Oxford, OH. I was not able to find a 5 G’s BBQ using a web search, however, there sure could be one.

Overall, it is a interesting tasting, sweet, not very hot BBQ sauce, that has some potential, if you can find the right food to use it on. If anyone can supply more information as to the ingredients, or, as to who is making this sauce, it would be much appreciated.

Best Regards
John Z

I met Liz several times. Not only at Weekend of Fire but at a couple Farmers Markets in the area. Super nice lady! It’s been a while since I’v had anything of hers but I do remember the unique flavor. Not sure if I got pumpkin pie but there was some spice there for sure. Contact info from her business card is fivegenerations5 at yahoo.com

LOL, Well, I had to try it on something, and did not have any chicken in the freezer.

Thanks for Liz’s Email Hudd.

I will try to contact her, and see if I can find out the ingredients of this mystery BBQ Sauce. Without a label, it is just a guessing game.
