Little Willie’s Grenade Salsa – Pinapple Mango

Introduction:

Let me start by saying right off the bat that I am not a fan of pineapple.  The only way I eat it is in Pineapple upsidedown cake.  So remember that as we proceed.

Appearance:

One of the first things that strikes you is that this doesn’t loo like your standard salsa.  From the outside, it has an orangish dull yellow color with noticeable chunks of what looks like Pineapple and some orange flecks.  Once you open it, it looks a little like chunky baby food.  Once you spoon it out, it begins to look like salsa, albeit quite a bit more yellow than I am accustomed.  It is think and chunky and holds its form well. It has an interesting look that I think would definitely get some interest from partygoers if layed out with other appetizers.

Label:

The label is eye-catching, but not gaudy.  The color scheme actually compliments the look of the contents very well.  It has a nice blend of cartoon with actual photography which you don’t see often.  It actually takes a moment to notice the photographs they are so well designed and implemented.  The banner style brand and large font of the product name make it easy to recognize and distinguish.  It looks like a lot of thought went into this design.

Aroma:

This is one area where I am at a loss.  I simply can’t describe the aroma.  My first thought was that it smelled like pumpkin pie (go figure).  It smells appetizing, light, almost sweet and for some reason reminds me of the holidays.  There seems to be almost a ginger scent.   Sorry, I just can’t nail this one down.

Taste:

Well, now I can add one more thing I like Pineapple in.  This is very tasty stuff.  Right off the spoon it has a very tropical flavor (go figure).  It tastes almost like a dessert with the taste of fresh fruit and sweet syrup.  After a few seconds, it begins to start tasting more like salsa as the flavors of the onion, cilantro, and peppers start to come out.  And it is followed by a nice back heat.

Heat Level:

This salsa is listed as Mild, but is more along the lines of Medium in your standard store brands.  It has enough heat to let you know that it is still salsa despite the sweet front.  It is very flavorful with just enough heat to appeal to the majority of people.

Overall Opinion:

Little Willie’s has done an amazing job of mixing some very powerful flavors with a lot of preconceptions together in a way that was as interesting as it was enjoyable.  And while I would not use it as my primary salsa as I am more of a traditionalist, it would be a great addition to spice up an Ilsand themed meal or as an appetizer at a party.  I look forward to trying it in some of our recipes in place of normal salsa.  Great Job Little Willie’s!  This concept could have gone horribly wrong, but you pulled of a very complex blend of flavors with flying colors and even Pineapple Haters such as myself will be impressed.

I love pineapple, and haven’t found a salsa that has found the secret formula with it as an ingredient. Some of come close, but in the end, something is missing. Scott told me of another company that he loved, and I bought it, but someone else in the house ate it before I could get at it. My loss. Anyway, this is one I look forward to trying somewhere down the line.

BW, good to see you kept your mind open to new things. You never know what you might find when you taste something despite one’s previous beliefs.

Good review, BW.

Buddah, you might be referring to Santa Fe Seasons’ Flaming Pineapple Salsa. It’s great with chicken or fish, as a dessert salsa, or just munchin’ with tortilla chips. It’s my favorite all-around sweet salsa.

Well done BW.. I love that you kept an open mind.

Scott, yes I was. I just didn’t want to mention them in someone else’s review. ;)

Sounds interesting, I’d like to give this a try!

Great to hear that you liked the Little Willie’s Grenade Salsa, Bw !

I tried it a while back and found it be an excellent product, that was well liked by me and my friends.
