BENITO’S ORIGINAL NARANJA

Welcome back Benito. We were excited to try your ‘Original Naranja’. The last sauce of yours ‘White Hot’ was so very good and unusual. This sparked our curiosity and saliva glands to try your other sauces. I want to be sitting by the river shown on your label tasting great hot sauce. Let’s all sit by river and relax and taste “Original Naranja’.

Aroma & Texture

Original Naranja smells of onions and lime juice. This is a pleasurable aroma. The color is a beautiful orange red color. The texture is of a thick puree

Ingredients

Vermont grown organic habanero peppers, organic carrots,  organic lime juice, organic extra virgin olive oil, orange bell peppers, lime juice, white onion, distilled white vinegars, and garlic are the ingredients of this sauce. Kudos, to Benito for using all these natural and organic products.

Label

I have mixed thoughts about this label. There is a scene of a beautiful valley on an overcast day. The words “A DELECTABLE ADDICTION” scroll the bottom of the picture. Maybe I am putting too much thought into this. It does not really grab my attention and I sort of do not get it. On the back of the label is a picture of a man (Benito?) relaxing by the river. I like that. He is enjoying himself so to me that translates to enjoyment of his product.

Taste

Onion, carrots with a little lime kick is the flavors I taste. It was pleasant but something was lacking. There is no salt in this product. Lime juice can be the jolt to bring the flavor around as the sauce ‘Benito’s White Heat’ demonstrated. With this sauce the flavor was flat and bland. We wanted to taste the habanero’s but they were a no-show in the taste department. We tried the ‘Original Naranja with some home made tamales. The sauce made for a pretty picture but was on the back burner literally in taste.

Heat

This was a disappointment. The heat level was not there. Habanero’s were listed as the first ingredient. It did not have a habanero flavor or the wonderful heat that habanero’s can bring. I would even go as far as saying this sauce is mild.

Overall

I love that Benito is using all natural and organic products. Some people will be happy that he does not use salt. Benito’s labels can be fun. They can be whimsical. It is like going to an art gallery and wondering what did this artist mean? The sauce is a beautiful red and orange color. The taste and heat did not deliver in my opinion. The flavor was flat and not exciting. I will even say it was bland. Overall I would not purchase this sauce again.

  1. Eddie,
Thank you for taking the time to review my sauce. You have reminded me that I have definitely picked a very subjective business, there is no doubt about that. Hope all is well. – Ol’ Benito

  2. Whoops, meant to write that to Chilebrown…my bad. At least the tamales look scrumptious… – Ol’ Benito

  3. Dear Ol’Benito, Thanks for being gracious. There are so many things I like about your sauces. We loved the “White Hot”, Natural Organic ingredients, color, labels and posititive reputation. You have a lot of other sauces and peppers to offer. I plan to place an order to try some. Thankyou! Chilebrown

  4. Good review, Paul. While I respect your opinion, I have to strongly disagree. I absolutely love this sauce. I dig the garden-fresh taste of the veggies and all the subtle nuances of how the flavors blend together. Who needs salt when you have all these wonderful other flavors harmonizing together?

I’ve gone months without this sauce and it’s long overdue for me to order some more up from Ol’ Benito. :)

  5. 2 words…”multiple review”. I have had recent discussions with both Scott and Doug on this issue. Yes, it is harder to organize and takes a lot more time to post, but it will get less arguments, as seen from the last 2 reviews. Just my 2 cents.

  6. Dude the Multiple review comments are getting old.If you want you do them on your site…

  7. one of the first tastes were carrots, but no carrots in the ingredients list, did I miss something?
I’ve never tried Benito’s sauces but have heard good things about them.

  8. Marv, Thankyou for pointing out the omission of carrots. I have scolded the editor (myself) and it has been corrected.

You will never know, until you try them for yourself.
We really liked Benito’s White Hot.

  9. The typewriter is also getting old. If you have the ability to use a computer, why continue using the typewriter? I’m just saying. ;)

  10. I do hear what you are saying trust me.My whole point is that Peppers and More is not going that direction but please feel free to do it on…

I am always up for reading ……

  11. I appreciate the plug. I will be setting up multi-person reviews on ILIS, although there will be some single person reviews forthcoming because they were originally setup that way. I actually just received my first multiple person review in the mail yesterday so looking forward to getting that done soon.

Perhaps we can setup future reviews between our two blogs, having some written and some video formats. Something to think about. It would be an honor to be associated with some of your fine staff.

  12. As would we.sounds like a plan..we will talk more.Im heading down to AC but will check in with you this weekend some time

  13. Hey Boy’s, Is there any chance you could bicker on a different channel. I gave a fun but serious review! Thanks
