Casey’s Big Dawg BBQ “BBQ Rub and Chili Mix

Ingredients:

Brown sugar, Celery Salt, Garlic powder, Chili powder, salt, white sugar, rosemary, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and other spices

I was pleasantly surprised one day when this arrived in the mail.  I had been thinking about making chili for about a week or so until this came in.  My mind was made up for me.  I had to do a review for this product and I wanted to make chili.  Well, how convenient was it that there is a killer recipe for “Dawghouse Chili” on the side.

This rub/chili mix comes in 6.5 oz. container with a simple label.  It has a dog at the top with Casey’s name right underneath the picture.  On the left side of the picture is the ingredient for the “Dawghouse Chili” and on the right side is the ingredients list and  cute little passage about Casey, the owner’s dog.  Not exactly a eye-catching label.  But, you can never judge a book by it’s cover.

Straight up, this rub takes on many different flavors.  First, you notice the sweetness of the brown sugar and possibly the white sugar.  This rub would probably be fine without the white sugar though.   After a second or two, you definitely taste the celery salt.  Then comes the taste of chili powder, onion, and  salt.  By the way, the salt in this rub is not overbearing.  I find this rub very tasty and I could imagine this going on more than steaks and in chili.

Now, on food, I feel this is good on just about everything.  It’s perfect for chili and mostly red meats.  But, I sprinkled this on some steamed veggies and on some chicken as well( sorry, I didn’t take any pics).  It brings a nice sweet and spicy flavor to anything that you use it on without overpowering and taking away from the flavor of the food. This mix really made the chili taste wonderful.  So wonderful, that I had a hard time saving some chili for later.  It went well on burgers.  Although, I had to add a little bit more garlic to my burger mixture.  For those who use seasoning salt a lot,  I think this could replace seasoning salt easily.

Overall,  I think this is a great product.  I wish it had a little bit more presence from the garlic powder.  But, other than that, I would not change a thing.  I would definitely recommend this to anyone out looking for a BBQ rub.  Also, it is very affordable.  A good rub that is reasonably affordable. What more could you ask more?

  1. Nice Review Ryan.

    Sounds like an interesting product.

With the brown and white sugar, I am surprised that it worked well in making chili and on burgers, without making them too sweet.

I bet it would work well on pork and chicken.
