After a cold, rainy Friday, Saturday turned out to be beautiful.

 

Ah….The sweet smell of smoke filled the air throughout downtown Washington, MO April 20th and 21st.   Thirty-nine of the best bbq team in the area cooked chicken, ribs, pork and brisket in hopes of attaining outdoor cooking culinary glory…a Grand Championship.  This contest even featured a dessert category.  Woo-wee!  This place was a carnivores dream!

 

 

 

Here is our unorganized, unsophisticated set up.

Friday morning was cold and rainy.

 

Friday evening was the first turn-in…dessert.  A chocolate-caramel cheesecake with Reese’s Peanut Butter cup topping.  Looks pretty tasty!

Friday night was party time for some.                               And time to get serious for others.

                                                                     
The fun and games were over Friday…time to trim and prep our long cooking meats.
         Here we are trimming our pork.
       And brisket.
It was a cold, windy night but first light brought visions of smokers chugging away back into view.
The first turn-in time (noon) came upon us quicker than expected but we were on time for all four KCBS categories.  Here are the four turn-in’s starting with chicken at noon, ribs at 12:30, pork at 1pm and finally brisket at 1:30.
    
Overall, we were pretty happy with our product, but what did the judges think?
We received a 3rd in chicken, 8th in pork and 11th overall.  Not too bad for our first contest of the season!
Our next competition is May 11-12 at the Kickoff Cookoff in Florissant, MO.  Stay tuned for an update after than contest.
