Scott’s Best Spicy Products of 2011

The following are items and companies I’ve chosen as featuring the best that have been released or that I’ve encountered for the first time during the 2011 calendar year. To qualify, this product either had to be released after January 1, 2011 or I would have tasted it for the very first time in the past year. Believe me, there were dozens of worthy sauces, seasonings and food enhancers I would have loved to include and so many product manufacturers that deserved a mention. But I had to narrow it down to the creme de la creme and give the “Scottvies” (with apologies to Dave DeWitt) to my top choices in each category.

Uncle Red’s Jerky

Based out of Monroe, Georgia, Uncle Red’s Spicy Beef Jerky is another fine all-natural beef jerky manufacturer that offers both regular Original and Spicy versions. I’m reviewing the Spicy jerky this time out.

Ingredients:
Beef, vinegar, water, soy sauce, corn syrup, molasses, wine, salt, spices, garlic, onion, caramel color, anchovies, tamarind extract, succinic acid, red pepper, sodium benzoate, black pepper, sugar, monosodium glutimate, ginger, and paprika.

Black Forest Bison Jerky

Black Forest Bison is a small family run bison ranch near Colorado Springs, CO. They sell a variety of bison meat cuts and products. Jerky seems to be their big seller.

This “Caliente Canyon” is also their hottest jerky.

I got a good deal of burn, about what I would rate on my hot scale as a “medium hot”. But it wasn’t so hot that it would make my eyes water, nose run, or scalp sweat. In a way, that was good because it gives you a decent level of burn but lets you keep eating without pause.

Jerky Contest Entries Reviewed

Last year you asked for reviews of all the Jerky Challenge entries, and for this year’s contest you got ‘em!

Doug Spiros and I photographed and kept detailed notes on each jerky entry as we judged them. Of course, Sograte BBQ and Brew’s Baconstein Bacon Bites Jerky emerged as the Grand Prize Winner with a perfect score of 11 from both of us, but below are how all the others fared.

All jerkies were judged on the following criteria: Taste, which simply measured how delicious an entry was. Even know we love spicy jerky, a jerky didn’t have to be hot in order for us to like them; Texture, how tough, chewy or soft, long cut, short cut, thick or thin the meat was, and; Snackability, which was how much an addictive snack the jerky was. 5 possible points were given for taste, and 3 possible points were given for both Texture and Snackability, for a possible total of 11… Continue reading →

A Couple O’ Jerks Beef Jerky……

Ingredients..Beef,Salt,Spices,Brown Sugar,Fermented Soy,Worcestershire Powder,Dehydrated Onion and Garlic.Tomato Powder,Natural Hickory Smoke.

I do not do many jerky reviews but I have been wanting to try this jerky for quit some time now.The Jerky that I will be reviewing today will be their Original Recipe.You can see right away that this jerky is thick.No thin see through pieces here.

Buffalo Jerky

This does not bother me since I am not offended easily, but on the cover of the jerky package it has a picture of a man running. You can see from the picture it is a red man.
