The following are items and companies I've chosen as featuring the best that have been released or that I've encountered for the first time during the 2011 calendar year. To qualify, this product either had to be released after January 1, 2011 or I would have tasted it for the very first time in the past year. Believe me, there were dozens of worthy sauces, seasonings and food enhancers I would have loved to include and so many product manufacturers that deserved a mention. But I had to narrow it down to the creme de la creme and give the "Scottvies" (with apologies to Dave DeWitt) to my top choices in each category.

Please bear with me as I speak with an upper respiratory infection. I hope my scratchy voice isn't too annoying to listen to, especially as it gets later into the video.... Continue reading →

A flying biped with hooves or a dark chocolate bar spiked with chipotle chile studded with tart cranberry bits? Let’s explore the latter. This chocolate bar was named after a creature that was the thirteenth child of a local whore, Mother Leeds. As she gave birth she cried out: “Let it be the Devil”. Enough of this tall tale and lets taste some chocolate from New Jersey. This chocolate bar has 54 percent cacao content. The cranberries are locally sourced from New Jersey. (Did you know New Jersey is the third largest cranberry producer in the United States?).

I would say in my opinion these chips are new, but it does not say on the bag that they are a new flavor.

The Picture on the bag of chips looks like a bottle of the cheap 2 dollar Mexican hot sauce you can buy at most stores. I was looking at the picture on the guy on the bottle of hot sauce on the bag of chips, The guy does not look like he is Mexican to me, he looks like some white guy with a sombrero on. So I showed the bag to a friend of mine and said, does the guy look like a Mexican to you? She said with a laugh, he looks like a fake Mexican.

This year's Best Jerky Challengewas different than last year's in that there was one and only one category to enter in a winner-take-all bout to the finish. Most of the entries were beef jerky, with a few odd meats thrown into the competition. Overall, Doug and I (the two judges involved in evaluating the entries this time out) agreed that all the jerkies were even better this year than last year. Several of them we thought to be high quality snacks that deserved a shot at being Grand Champion.

When Kettle Brand Potato Chips first became available in 1982, they quickly became my favorite. They had a crisp crunch, were not greasy like many potato chips, and had a great flavor.
As they added more flavors, I tried them all as they made it to the stores, and really liked the new additions like Sea Salt and Vinegar, Yogurt & Green Onion, Sour Cream & Onion, and Backyard Barbeque.

Texas has deep fried beer.

It took Mark Zable three years to develop the recipe – he won’t divulge the secret for successfully frying a liquid – but his entry is among eight vying for glory at the Sixth Annual Big Tex Choice Awards. For the past five years, scores of hopefuls have entered their recipes for everything from deep fried butter to deep fried lattes, as well as deep fried peaches and cream and chicken-fried bacon, in an all-out effort to capture the crown at the State Fair of Texas.

Mango Inferno from the kitchen of Patter Fam Sauces has a light and understated label. The green, yellow, and red mangos hover above some thin and pointy flames. The color scheme of the rest of the bottle follows the lead and the use of yellows, oranges and reds compliment the sauce very well. You can tell a great deal of thought went into bring the overall look of this product together.

It is a chunky salsa with no heat. It looks like it has tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, and garlic. It smells very good when you open it. You can smell the garlic and onion first. Then, you can smell the tomato and peppers. It tasted fresh, not mushy, but not crispy either.

When I smelled them right out of the can, the first thing I smelled was a strong almond smell, I would have thought peppers or the BBQ flavor would be strong but it was not.

I love honey mustard and deep fried chicken, so I made some deep fried chicken fingers to try it. I thought this mustard was so good, I was telling my wife I could put it all over...

I like the label. It looks like it was a hand-made design. My dad grew cactus when I was a kid. I suppose with the pricks on them you could view them as wicked.

The ingredients are as follows: Tomatoes, Caramelized Onions, Garlic, Habanero, Apple Cider Vinegar, Salt, Sugar, Spices. Continue reading →

34° Crispbread crackers are on the plate today. This cracker is lighter, crispier, and all natural compared to your average cracker. This cracker comes in 6 different flavors. (Cracked Pepper, Rosemary, Natural, Sesame, Lemon Zest, and Whole Grain). 34° is an unusual name for a cracker. Thirty four degrees is the latitude of Sydney Australia where the founder, Craig Lieberman was inspired to create these crackers. They are now made in Boulder County, Colorado. These crackers are super light and thin almost like a wafer. They have low calories and no fat. They have a texture like a wafer ice cream cone. Let’s give them a taste.

I was at Trader Joe's grocery store and found Thai Lime and Chili Cashews. When you first open the bag and stick your nose in and take a whiff, you get a smell of the cashew nuts. There really is not a strong smell of the other spices on the nuts.

OK this is a brain child of Geetha Jayaraman and a little history of the origination.

The story of Grab Em Snacks and our plantain chips goes back to Geetha Jayaraman's (Grab Em Snacks' President and Founder) childhood spent growing up in India and Malaysia where plantain chips were as ubiquitous as potato chips are today.
